NAYB Spring Program Overview

Spring Program Overview

Spring Program Overview

The T-Ball Division focuses on developing baseball fundamentals, like basic throwing and swing mechanics, as well as foster a love for the game, with no emphasis on wins and losses. This division is recommended for 4- and 5-year-olds, based on the age determination chart (linked above). Players in this division will learn to hit off a tee, and play all positions. Birth dates from May 1, 2020 through April 30, 2022 should register in this division.

The Instructional Division focuses on developing baseball skills and fundamentals, and fostering a love for the game, with less emphasis on wins and losses. This division is recommended for 5- and 6-year-olds, based on the Cal Ripken age determination chart (linked above). Players in this division will learn to hit off a tee, and later in the season may hit off coach-pitch. Player commitment is one weekday (varies based on coach availability) and Sundays during the season, which runs from mid-April until the end of the school year. Birth dates from May 1, 2019 through April 30, 2020 should register in this division.

The Rookie Division is recommended for 7- and 8-year-olds, based on the Cal Ripken age determination chart (linked above). This division begins as a coach-pitch league where outs and strikeouts are recorded.  We do not keep score. Later in the season, we may introduce kid-pitch with limits on scoring and no stolen bases. Scores and standings are tracked, and a playoff is held at the end of the season. Birth dates from May 1, 2017 through April 30, 2019 should register in this division.

The Minors Division continues to focus on developing baseball skills and fundamentals, but we begin to record outs, keep score, and introduce some basic baseball strategies. This Division is recommended for 9- and 10-year-olds, based on the Cal Ripken age determination chart (linked above). Play in these divisions continues to focus on developing fundamentals, with an introduction to more complex baseball strategies and a higher level of competition. This is a kid-pitch league with limits on scoring and no stolen bases. Scores and standings are tracked, and a playoff is held at the end of the season. Birth dates from May 1, 2015 through April 30, 2017 should register in this division.

The Majors Division is most experienced level of Cal Ripken Baseball, recommended for 11- and 12-year-old players. Cal Ripken Baseball is played under the Official Baseball Rules, but implements some special (local) rules as necessary for the development and welfare of this age group.  This division features a 50' pitching distance and 70' base paths, thus allowing players to learn and experience the rules of the game before moving to the bigger diamond at 13.  Majors offers the very best players a chance to be selected to represent the town over the summer.  There is a tournament trail from District competition through the World Series in Branson, MO at Ballparks of America featuring 8 International Champions. Birth dates from May 1, 2013 through April 30, 2015 should register in this division.

Our Big Diamond Division (aka Babe Ruth) is for players 13U and older. Big Diamond Division is played on the full-sized baseball diamond with 90' bases, 60'6" pitching distance, using "real" baseball rules like leading off, balks, and headfirst slides. The season starts in April and ends in early June. There are usually 3 events (game or practices) per week, on weekdays and weekends, including Sundays. There is some limited travel, with games played both in town and with teams from Methuen, Andover, Haverhill, and perhaps Lawrence.

NOTE TO HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS: Yes, you can play both HS ball and North Andover Youth Baseball (town ball). The NAHS coach, Todd Dulin, encourages players to play both if they wish. The high school team will be your priority in the event of a conflict, but NA Youth Baseball works closely with NAHS to avoid schedule conflicts and overuse, especially of pitchers. There have been many players who did both without any issues, so we encourage you to register early - if you make a HS team and choose to drop out of NA Youth Baseball, please let us know as soon as you can.

The Bambino Division is for developmentally and physically challenged youth of all ages, helping them to enjoy the full benefits of Babe Ruth participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities.  This program replaces Challenger. Registration for this division is open to all ages.

NAYB Summer Program Overview

Summer Program Overview

Summer Program Overview

U7 Clinics

Informal coach pitch program for ages 5 and 6 year olds (and 7 year olds whose parents feel their child is not ready for a player pitch league). The program will meet two days per week for approximately 75 minutes. The format will be roughly 45 minutes of skills and drills, 30 minutes of a scrimmage game with the players being grouped by skill level, based on the players in attendance each night.

Small Diamond Summer League (Ages 7-12)

Most players will compete in the Merrimack Valley Small Diamond League (MVSDL). This is a PLAYER PITCH league which competes against teams from nearby towns, so there is some TRAVEL involved. This league plays approximately 8 games (half of which are played in North Andover), with a single-elimination playoff to conclude the season in early August. Every effort is made to schedule all of the games on weeknights (Mondays-Fridays). Practices are scheduled at the coaches' discretion.

District*/Baystate Select Teams

This is an additional Summer opportunity for players ages 8-12. Selection to these teams is based on tryouts and/or coach evaluations as season gets underway.

North Andover will also enter 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U and 12U teams into the Ripken District 2 Tournament. Players selected who accept a spot on a District team are not eligible to play on an MVSDL team*. As a reminder, participating on a District team requires a level of commitment and your child should plan to attend all practices and games. There is also an additional $110 fee for the District Team.

*District team players must have played in the spring season and participated in more than 1/2 the completed games.  Since there is no 8U division in the Baystate Tournament, the 8U team will play in the "competitive" division in the Merrimack Valley Small Diamond League.

90' Big Diamond Summer League (Ages 13-16)

NAYB has competitive and developmental summer programs for players Cal Ripken ages 13 to 15 on the 90’ Big Diamond.

You MUST register before MAY 31st to be assigned to a team. If you didn’t play spring NAYB, yes, you can still play for a Summer Big Diamond team. Teams will be formed based on the number of available coaches for summer.

All teams get the same quality uniforms and equipment, and all teams travel and play both weekdays and weekends, usually Sunday. There are usually 3 events per week, sometimes 4.

Fall Program Overview

7/8U Travel, 9/10U Travel, 11/12U Travel

In an effort to give kids the opportunity to play more baseball in the fall season, NAYB has decided to join together with Haverhill & Methuen to create a Fall Baseball League for the following ages: 7/8U, 9/10U, and 11/12U. For each age grouping, we strive to have about 8-10 games (50% home games with other requiring short travel), with no playoffs and standings will not be tracked. Games are generally on Sundays, practices are at the discretion of the selected Head Coach. If you have interest in coaching, please indicate so during the registration process by creating a volunteer role for yourself.

Note: Fall Ball starts a new year of baseball; thus, your player will age up for Fall from whatever age he or she played in for the Spring and/or Summer season of same year. Please refer to the following age chart to find your child's "baseball" age: https://www.baberuthleague.org/league-resources/baseball-age-chart
